An anti-romantic indie comedy described as an Annie Hall for Generation Y, Breaking Upwards examines a stifled twenty-something New York Jewish couple who, battling codependency, decide to engineer the dismantling of their relationship. Based on a real life experiment devised by director/actor Daryl Wein and co-writer/actress Zoe Lister-Jones, the film traces a year in their lives exploring alternatives to monogamy, and the madness that ensues. A complex look at young love, lust and the pangs of insecurity – all set against a Manhattan backdrop – Breaking Upwards reveals the imperfections of a modern couple who have grown tired of each other, and insist on breaking up on their own terms. The film features winningly comic performances by Peter Friedman, Julie White and Emmy-winner Andrea Martin (My Big Fat Greek Wedding), as the couple’s aging hippie parents.
