Music for all - Unique musical pieces at Titanic

Filmek/Fájdalomcsillapító2Cure for Pain: The Mark Sandman Story commemorates the legendary bass guitar-saxophon-drums rock band of the nineties and its front man. The lead vocalist of the Boston based Morphine, Mark Sandman, was one of the most influential musicians of his generation.

His hypnotic performance technique, enigmatic character, his independence and freedom of conventions made him a cult figure of rock history. His individual, smoky-jazzy music is acknowledged worldwide whereas his private life was full of tragedy. Sandman died in 1999 on stage during a concert. The movie is screened on April 16th, on Saturday at 16:00 at Toldi. (trailer)

Filmek/A zseni3The documentary Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould tells us about the contradictory personality of the world-famous Canadian piano artist and importance in music history. Although the eccentric, hypochondriac outsider musician’s concerts always attracted full-house audience, he hated public appearances and refused to go on stage after the age of 31. Michèle Hozer and Peter Raymond’s documentary unveils his peculiar world with the help of previously unpublished extracts, photos, sound recordings and diaries, as well as close friends’ and lovers’ first-time interviews. Screening on April 12th, Tuesday, at 18:15 at KINO. (trailer)

Filmek/Nézd, mit tud a fény!2Canadian songwriter-singer Leslie Feist’s album The Reminder gained all the awards at the Juno Awards, the “Canadian Grammy”. Look at What the Light Did Now tracks down the birth of the successful album in 2007. Anthony Seck poetic documentary of impressionist style was shot during 4 years and concentrates on Feist and her colleagues’ confidential relationship, representing the creative process of songwriting in a detailed and sensible way. The screening is on April 16th, Saturday at 14:30 at Toldi. (trailer)

Filmek/Pool Party2Pool Party is an American documentary that evokes the story of a spa in the New York McCarren park out of use for years now. The bath, once boasting with the largest outdoor pool, was part of President Roosevelt’s full employment programme, however the once crowded, trendy city bath lost its popularity by the 1980s and started to decay. It was abandoned for almost 25 years, when it became the scene of special music events for the time of three short summers. Among the performers were the Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth, Yeah Yeah Yeahs or M.I.A. Beth Aala’s film renders atmosphere of this Brooklyn-based Woodstock with fine soundtrack and spectacular concert extracts. Screening on April 13th, Wednesday at 17:00 in Toldi. (trailer)

Filmek/Elefántcsonttorony3Canadian comedy Ivory Tower presents the concurrence of two completely different personalities who happen to be brothers. They’re both professional chess players and get confronted because of a woman, fighting their final battle at an international competition. The main roles in the music comedy are played by such eminent figures of the Canadian underground as the Bohemian multi-talented Gonzales, DJ Tiga who’s also a frequent guest in Hungary, and the scandal queen of the 2010 Sziget festival, Peaches. All of them under the direction of the Puppetmastaz hiphop group member, Adam Traynor. A must-see for electro-fans on 13th, Wednesday at 20:30 at Örökmozgó! (trailer)

Filmek/Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll5English pic Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll allows us to get an insight into the life of one of the most charismatic musicians of recent times, Ian Dury. Having survived child paralysis, the musician is doomed to limp for the rest of his life. His eccentric personality is embodied by Andy Serkis (alias Gollum), while his partners are such outstanding actors as Ray Winstone, Olivia Williams and Naomie Harris. The film is Hungary-related in the sense that the script is written by Paul Viragh who has Hungarian origins. The movie starts at 17:45 in Toldi. (trailer)
