During an uprising by a group of Kanuk independents in Ouvéa, New Caledonia, 30 gendarmes are taken hostage. Captain Philippe Legorjus, from the GIGN (special forces) and Alphonse Dianou, spokesman for the hostage-takers, initiate negotiations. Because of the French election, the political establishment wanted an immediate end to this and the uprising is brutally shut down by the French military.
Violent and humane, this war film about social injustice, brotherhood and respect could not be shot on Ouvéa, where the trauma is still tangible. Rebellion seals Mathieu Kassovitz’ return as a great director after some poor American adventures.
