An old woman living in public toilets and neon-lit corridors. A 23-year-old Paraguayan man trying to make it by smuggling coke in his stomach. A cop firing his pistol to scare the birds. A failed asylum-seeker. Live lobsters... You’ll find everything at Milan’s Malpensa international airport as observed by Italian filmmakers Martina Parenti and Massimo D’Anolfi throughout an entire year for their new documentary Il castello, winner of the special jury prize at this year’s Hot Docs. With its silences and clean, precise, head-on shots, an overt reference to our current obsession with security, the film takes us into the usually off-limits areas of the airport and turns them into a stage for an epic and fascinating human tragicomedy.
