Western frontiers of the USSR, 1942. The region is under German occupation, and local partisans are fighting a brutal resistance campaign. After a derail of a train innocent Sushenya is arrested with a group of saboteurs, but the German officer sets him free. Rumours of Sushenya’s treason spread quickly, and partisans arrive from the forest to get revenge. Soon they get ambushed, and Sushenya finds himself one-to-one with his wounded enemy, forced to make a moral choice under immoral circumstances.

The film is made in a minimalist, restrained manner. Any emotion, even if present in certain episodes is understated – in the manner of acting and in all the structural elements. The film is like a tight nerve. Despite the difficulties (participants has spoken in nine different languages in the set) Loznitsa convinced the critics in Cannes.
