Returning from Navy service in World War II, Freddie Quell drifts through a series of PTSD-driven breakdowns. Finally he stumbles upon a cult which engages in exercises to clear emotions and he becomes deeply involved with them. There's a mysterious and strange relationship between Quell and Lancaster Dodd, the leader of the cult. Paul Thomas Anderson’s sixth feature is a provocative portrait about people pursuing a vision of betterment. The incredible performances of Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman is widely acknowledged  - Phoenix made an enormous effort for the role, lost siginficant weight, and was allowed to improvise in the set. Jonny Greenwood's dark, jazzy soundtrack fit perfectly to this dark, lost post-World War II environment.
