The basic plot concerns the attempts by a Senior Major named Oktiabr’skii (Fedor Bondarchuk) and his young protégé, boxer Egor Dorin (Danila Kozlovskii), to identify a German spy named Wasser and stop his plans of subterfuge that will allow the Nazis to invade unnoticed. The Spy is a historical film in a futuristic setting with elements of comedy to boot, Spy’s debut brought a popular genre to the big screen in Russia. Alexei Andrianov has done a good job: he has not only succeeded in conveying the adopted novel's author's Akunin’s futuristic style, but has also convinced an actor as self-centered as Fyodor Bondarchuk to adapt his ego to suit the film’s style. This really spectacular film recreated and transformed the contemporary view of the city.
