THE 20TH TITANIC IN NUMBERS

The event held between 5-13 April included 61 feature films and 13 shorts. The audience had the chance to watch the cream of contemporary films in 5 different venues, on 122 public screenings in Budapest. The festival, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, featured 10 films in the competition section, which competed for the Hullámtörők (Breaking Waves) Award . This-year’s winner is Lore, which won 8000 euros, thanks to the support of the Hungarian National Film Fund. The 20th Titanic achieved better results than the past years’ average, there were 10 700 visitors.


There is no official data about how much Staropramen beer the audience consumed and how much coffee the 20-member-crew drank, but there are some things for sure. 12 producers, directors, actors accompanied their films in Budapest from 3 continents, and some of them have visited the film studio of Fót. The audience had the chance to watch the cream of contemporary films in 5 different venues, on 122 public screenings in Budapest. The Uránia, Örökmozgó, Toldi Cinema, and for the first time in Puskin Cinema, as well as on the ship A-38.

Professionals and visitors could meet the head of the jury, who was Jiri Menzel this year. The world famous Czech director had watched 10 films and gave 20 interviews in 2 days, and what he considered to be “good fun”. Baltasar Kormakur, Icelander director (Jarcity, White Night Wedding) was a guest of the closing gala too and is presently shooting a film in Budapest. During the festival there were numerous meetings between producers, and they came to an agreement about distributing The Silent Ones in Hungary.

During the festival 200 translator machines were in use and 20 translators were constantly working on the screenings. One of them translated 8 films, he spent 1509 minutes in the translation booth, which is altogether more than 25 hours. Beside the staff members, 80 volunteers helped in the operative work; there were Finnish, Polish and Portuguese among them.

The 20th Titanic achieved better results than the past years’ average, there were 10 700 visitors. There were more than 20 full house screenings, the largest number of audience watched the Irish film, Grabbers: 423 attended the 2 screenings. The Hullámtörők award winner, Lore follows it with 402 viewer, the film with the third-highest attendance was the Norwegian tragicomedy, Fuck up. Out of the movies screened on the festival, The Master, Broken, Lore, ILL Manors, Silent Ones and Smashed will soon be distributed in Hungary in DVD format.

The official dates of the 21th International Titanic Festival are 4-12, April in 2014.
